The dark theme worked well on our product pages, but it felt a bit too dim for the account management interface. To improve usability, we've designed a fresh new look that strikes the right balance—not too bright, but highly readable and easy to navigate. During the update, we also resolved a few bugs to enhance overall performance. We hope you enjoy the improved design and that it helps you manage everything more efficiently.

We've been working on creating a darker background website for some time now. Recently we finally found a version we like a lot and it passed all the checkmarks! We know changes can be a pain, so we're keeping the menu and links as close as possible to keep the navigation the same. Furthermore, we'll be changing over to the new website version this Sunday, which likely means the dust will take some time to settle. We'll have a bounty at some point for reporting errors, if you notice any in the meantime, please let us know!

Have a great weekend, and thank you for choosing Web Host Pro!

We loved AIOS and have used it exclusively on hundreds of WordPress websites for over ten years. But a side-by-side comparison puts Wordfence far ahead now. With Wordfence Central, you can manage multiple websites in one screen. Wordfence also uses AI to analyze your website and use the best options automatically.

AIOS seems to be having more issues lately and in some cases blocks good visitors and spiders. We have not seen this issue with Wordfence.

So we suggest removing any other security or login protecting plugins (like Loginizer and AIOS) in your WordPress admin section, and add Wordfence with their Wordfence central service you can add here first and connect it:

You can check your domain here to see what email is on file: https://centralops.net/co/DomainDossier.aspx?

You would click the WHOIS option and search the results for the registrant email.

It's really exciting to have Litespeed up and running on our shared servers. Not all are converted yet. but we are upgrading them quickly.

To take full advantage of Litespeed you need to add the Litespeed plugin into your WordPress. We have suggested WP-Optmize before but we are now suggesting to replace that and any other caching program with Litespeed.

Once you install the plugin, make sure to remove any other caching programs.

Then click the link" "presets"

On that page click the button under: "Advanced (Recommended)"

Then click the: Dashboard link and sync

It will say you have to you have to get a domain key. Click that link and click get domain key. It will update with a key in about three minutes.

Then click Automatically Upgrade and choose Save.

You might as well clean things up when there! For this click the "database" link. On that page click "Clean all".

Most tests are showing a 3x faster load improvement once this is added and set up on our new servers.

Optionally, you can register for an account with Litespeed and access their CDN. This will help speed things up as well!

CPanel has raised all their prices again. We have changed our prices to reflect their changes. We still sell cPanel and related services at our cost, plus a small card processing fee. We are sorry for the price increase from cPanel and have sent them concerns about overpricing it. Hopefully, they stay with a consistent price for now or lower it in the future. As an alternative, DirectAdmin might be a better price per service.

Because of cPanel's constant price changes, we are forced to only allow monthly license billing. If you have yearly cPanel license billing, it will finish the year and change to monthly billing after. CPanel monthly billing will likely be on the 10th of each month with a prorating option since cPanel syncs with their system on the 14th to make sure the licenses are paid.

The Importance of Adding Your Email for Website Alerts

One essential tool that empowers users to remain up-to-date is the option to receive website alerts by adding your email to your cPanel. These alerts serve as a lifeline of information, notifying users about crucial updates, news, and changes to our service. The importance of adding your email for website alerts cannot be understated. In an age where information constantly evolves, staying informed is a powerful tool. These alerts provide you with real-time updates, personalized content, and opportunities that might otherwise pass you by. By leveraging the benefits of website alerts, you can keep track of your website with confidence, staying engaged, informed, and ahead of the curve.

To add your email, just log into your cPanel and click the face icon on the top right-hand side. Then scroll down the list and click Contact Information.

Why get email alerts for your cPanel?

1. Real-time Information at Your Fingertips

Website alerts, delivered straight to your inbox, bridge the gap by providing you with real-time updates. Whether it's breaking news, website alerts, or changes in website functionalities, email alerts ensure that you're among the first to know.

2. Personalized Content Delivery

By subscribing to website alerts in cPanel, you can access a personalized content delivery system. Instead of sifting through a sea of information, you receive updates tailored to your preferences. This personalization enhances your online experience, delivering the content that matters most to you without the noise.

3. Effortless Tracking of Updates

Keeping track of changes on your favorite websites can be a daunting task, especially if you frequent multiple platforms. However, with email alerts, this task becomes effortless. You no longer need to manually visit each site to check for updates. Instead, you receive notifications that summarize the changes, allowing you to quickly assess whether they are relevant to your interests or needs.

Watch out for bad actors pretending to be reputable companies to try and scam folks into sharing personal information, including passwords, account numbers, and banking details.

We’ve developed a set of tips and best practices below to help keep yourself and your account information safe.

Identifying Impostors

Scammers often create emails or public websites that look like they come from reputable companies, but in actuality are fake. You may be prompted to provide account information, like your email and password. But these fake emails and websites can steal your information, which is then used fraudulently.

Here at Web Host Pro, our website—and all communication from us—will be from webhost.pro or webhostpro.com. If an email from Web Host Pro comes to your inbox, check that it’s being sent from a webhost.pro or webhostpro.com email address. And, when you’re logging onto the Web Host Pro website, double-check that webhost.pro or webhostpro.com is what appears in the address bar. Genuine Web Host Pro websites will always end in "webhostpro.com." For example:

webhostpro.com

webhostproblog.com

Tips to Protect Yourself

Check return email addresses and website address bars to determine if they’re legitimate.

Use the customer service numbers or email addresses listed in invoices, account statements, or legitimate websites to confirm if the business is actually trying to reach you.

Don’t provide sensitive information over the phone unless you’re sure you’re talking to a legitimate organization. It’s always better to err on the side of caution vs assumption.

Don’t make payments or send money to someone whose identity you’re not able to verify.

Did you know removing unused files and email can make your website work faster? Servers are always scanning to check for viruses and errors, this means the server has to spend more time, and work harder on websites with lots of files and emails. By cleaning things up, not only will it help your website do the backend checks faster, it will help keep it safer and easier to manage.

Removing an email and readding it is a great way to clean everything up fast. We can also clean out entire emails by request. To remove files we suggest using the file manager in cPanel. Just make a full backup, download it, and remove the backup from the server. This will keep your files safe and available in case something is removed that was needed later.

If you see the structure jumbled or the links do not work, that's just because we changed the css, cookies, and backend code to enable these options. Which means, you might need to clear your history and cookies for web host pro to use and see the new options properly.

As CentOS fazes out, we've been watching where the new CentOS Eco system will go very closely and patiently. We don't want to start a new OS and find out it's not in it for the long haul or even worse, it's not safe. After 6 months of watching diligently, all signs point to AlmaLinux. AlmaLinux is managed by CloudLinux and several other major supporters are backing it up. We believe strongly it will take the place of the best Linux based server solution. We still have plenty of time to use CentOS 7 and there will likely be an upgradable option when support runs out in 2024. But we suggest downloading AlmaLinux anyways and getting used to it. We believe it will be the future of Linux for servers and a bright future is ahead.

We'd like to give special thanks to one of our customer's for helping us learn that TLS was in fact upgradable to TLS 1.3 in cPanel manually. We now have added versions +TLSv1.2 +TLSv1.3 to all shared and managed cPanel based servers. If you would like to add support for TLS v1.3 on your cPanel server, please follow these simple steps.

Log into the WHM

Search for Apache Configuration

Open Global Configuration

Find line: SSL/TLS Protocols

Click the manual add button and add: +TLSv1.2 +TLSv1.3

Scroll down and click save

Click re-configure apache on the page that comes up after saving and you're done.

If you have any questions or concerns about TLS or SSL or website security in general, just open a ticket anytime. We love to chat. We monitored the upgraded servers and no errors were reported for a week from the date of the upgrade so we feel it's safe to do so on all cPanel servers now. The nice thing is if an issue does come up, it's easily reverted back to only TLS 1.2.

It's official, WordPress's new theme Twenty Twenty-Two is now live and ready for use. We particularly like this theme because WordPress is getting closer to a website builder than a blogging platform by default. It allows for more theme modifications than any other theme from WordPress and it's looks great right from the start.

You may notice we moved our Web Host Pro blog to it here: https://blog.webhost.pro

We also like the idea of using a WordPress default theme for common WordPress websites because it's going to be secure and less likely to not be updated as needed. Make sure to delete the other themes not being used, those will waste resources and could potentially become a security risk.

We're really excited about it! Enjoy, and happy WordPressing

On September 1, 2021 Verisign, the .COM registry, will most likely raise the annual price for new .COM registrations for all registrars. We, in turn, must raise our .COM pricing as well to match the difference. In addition to this year's price increase, Verisign has the right to increase .COM domain fees by up to 7% in 2022 and 2023, as well in 2026 to 2029. The domain industry could face further .COM price increases in the upcoming years, making early renewals attractive - particularly if securing domains for multiple years.

We simply add the exact increased difference in price to .com registration and renewal that they add to us. There is no extra fees. They have not said the amount they will raise .com domains yet in September and there is a small chance they do not raise prices at all. If you register or renew before September 1st, you will not be effected by the possible price increase until you renew again. The most they have ever increased is $1 per year, but they could technically increase .com domains up to $2.14 per year. Our guess is that they will increase about $1 again this year and about $2-3 more on top of that over the next ten years.

2FA requires a smartphone with a supported time-based one-time password (TOTP) app. We suggest the following apps:

For Android™, iOS®, and Blackberry® — Google Authenticator™

For Android and iOS — Duo Mobile

For Windows® Phone — Authenticator

To configure 2FA, perform the following steps:

Click Set Up Two-Factor Authentication.

Link your cPanel account and your 2FA app:

To automatically create the link, scan the displayed QR code with your app.

To manually create the link, enter the provided Account and Key information in your app.

Within your 2FA app, retrieve the six-digit security code

Note: The 2FA app generates a new six-digit security code every 30 seconds.

Enter the six-digit security code in the Security Code text box.

Note: You must enter the security code within 30 seconds. After time expires, the app will generate a new six-digit code.

Click Configure Two-Factor Authentication.

Note: If you see a Failed to set user configuration: The security code is invalid. error, a problem may exist with the date and time settings on your server. To fix the issue, contact your hosting provider.

A big new step in website owner privacy is starting this week. ICANN has agreed to remove phone numbers from all WHOIS details. It's well known these listed phone numbers get spammed out real quick! And they are never used for anything relevant to the domain name. Of course ICANN wanted as much information from the domain owner as possible since they collect data as well.

Forced by the top domain registers around the world, ICANN has agreed that having a phone number with WHOIS is not needed and will be removed permanently on all WHOIS searches.

We know there is a lot of technical terms with web hosting and domains you probably prefer not to know. Propagation might not be one of those though. When you change a domain's DNS (domain name servers) or make any DNS changes. There is a time frame called propagation. This is a time when the change has been made locally, but the rest of the world has not updated their DNS to match it yet. Some smaller ISPs and even some smaller countries only update once a day. Most ISP services update within 4 hours or 14400 seconds. The larger ones update within 5 minutes. Back in 1998 when I started building websites it was 48 hours.

It simply takes more computing power for ISPs to update more often.

This is a good thing to know because new domains and DNS changes might seem like they are not working, when they really just have not propagated yet.

We recently had to disable changing the PHP version and the PHP INI editor in cPanel because of some errors that caused issues. After some core changes in the back end and help from cPanel, all the bugs are fixed, and it's working perfectly again.

Changing your PHP to the latest version possible is always a great idea. Each new version of PHP brings performance and security improvements that will help your website be better.

Having control over your own PHP version and INI file is particularly helpful because you can change PHP version or settings and simply change back if they have an issue. The old way was to add a ticket which can leave the leave site not working for the amount of time it takes for us to see the ticket and change it from our send.

You now have total control over the PHP version and most php.ini settings.

TIP: When changing PHP versions, wait at least 60 seconds and then click refresh. PHP changes take about a minute to be active, and sometimes it takes a couple hard browser refreshes (hold the control key and click refresh in the browser) for it to show the changes.

In your WHM (Web Host manager) click "Add a package" You can scroll down to the option or search for it in your WHM top left search bar. There, you can create your own custom packages and use them at your will.

We recently added the number one rated website virus scanner available for free to all accounts. Simply log into your cPanel and look for this link:

From there you can see a list of any effected web pages, images, or files. Once you see the list, you can go in and fix the file or delete it. Remember, most websites that are hacked are WordPress. The best defense is to have a trusted theme and trusted plug ins. You can also install the free all in one WordPress security plug in to help: https://wordpress.org/plugins/all-in-one-wp-security-and-firewall/

PHP is the engine behind active page websites like WordPress, Joomla, and Shopping carts. Most sites on Web Host Pro still use PHP 7.1 which is not bad, but PHP is now on version 7.3 which is much, much, faster and more secure. We highly suggest checking with any scripts you use to see if it will work with PHP 7.3 and let us know to upgrade your account. Or in your cPanel under "multi PHP" you can change the version yourself. You can even change it back after a couple minutes, if there is an error.

Just keep in mind when you make the PHP change, it takes about 5 minutes to update.

After constant complaints on cPanel's license price increases we managed to get them to lower the price a little more us.

Now if you have 5 or less accounts your cPanel will only be $13 a month. All prices still are month to month with no option to pay for more time at once. If you use addon domains, they will not count against your main account limit.

We also got a dollar of each other package as listed here:

cPanel admin cloud $13.00 - 5 or less main accounts.

cPanel auto scale internal ? - This is a higher price plan that auto adjusts to your package for you. If you fluctuate your amount of accounts, this can help not paying for more than you need.

cPanel plus cloud $26.00 - 50 or less main accounts.

cPanel premier cloud $33.00 - Unlimited main accounts.

cPanel pro cloud $18.00 - 30 or less main accounts.

These prices are still not etched in stone as even cPanel is having so much blow back from all their users on the big price increase. We are hoping to see even more lower prices in the future.

cPanel License Price Structure Changing

cPanel shocked us with a drastic price increase on all licenses. The pricing structure now is very different.

Up to 5 accounts: Admin licenses are $19.00 a month

Up to 30 accounts: Pro licenses are $29.00 a month

Up to 100 accounts: Premier licenses are $45.00 a month, with additional accounts at $0.20 each

We're suggesting, if you can no longer afford cPanel, move the VPS or Server to a shared reseller account. We have prices here: https://webhostpro.com/reseller-web-hosting

You will need the AdvancedR2 or ExtremeR2 reseller plans if you need a lot of power for your websites.

You can also move websites to addon domains and keep less than 5 cPanel accounts, this would make the payment $19 instead of $29. Furthermore, you can also change to Plesk, a lower-priced control panel that is a little harder to use. Also, you would get a Plesk license and support directly from them at this time.

There are other control panels as well, like:

https://www.ispconfig.org/
https://www.interworx.com/
https://control-webpanel.com/
https://www.webmin.com/
https://www.virtualmin.com/

If you choose a new control panel, we will set up a new VPS or server for free so you can set up the new control panel and transfer everything over. You might want to see if the control panel has a way to transfer from a cPanel server.

WordPress is a great way to build a website. So great, about a third of the Internet uses it now! Unfortunately though it is also not the most secure way, actually not by far. In the latest version 5.2 WordPress finally starts to address much needed security issues. We just hope this is the first step in a long line of security upgrades. WordPress, the content management system (CMS) is set to receive several new security features today that will finally add the protection users have wanted for years.

Included is cryptographically-signed updates, this adds support for a modern cryptography library.

A Site Health section in the admin panel backend.

A feature that will act as White-Screen-of-Death (WSOD) protection. Site admins will still be able to access their backend in the case of catastrophic PHP errors.

These features will fend off some fears in regard to certain attack vectors.

MySQL 5.5 is officially dying this week.

cPanel announced yesterday that it will block all updates to the server if it still uses MySQL 5.5. This means if you have been putting off upgrading your MySQL server wide, now is the time to do it. Not getting updates mean security and performance issues will soon follow. If you have a password warning for old MySQL users that use the old password structure. You will need to add a new user and update your scripts.

It's a tricky process, but very doable for anyone willing to spend 20 minutes.

This is only relevant for older VPS and dedicated servers that use MySQL 5.5 and older passwords. All shared and cloud services are updated. MySQL will give you a warning and list all users not compatible (if any) when you start the upgrade.

To make your passwords compatible, you need to open the MySQL section in your account's cPanel. There, you need to add a new MySQL user. Then, you need to connect the new MySQL user to the database with all permissions clicked. Now you are half way :)

Make sure and save the new MySQL user's username and password. I would cut and paste both into a text file.

Now you need to find how your scripts connect to MySQL. Wordpress for example uses the file. wp-config.php

In that file you need to change the username and password that was used in the MySQL section for the new MySQL user.

That's it! Now test it out. If you get a can't connect to database error, go over each step and make sure they were all done and the new user login and password is correct.

--------- cPanel's official press release ---------

Upgrading MySQL or MariaDB

cPanel & WHM Version 80 will not support MySQL 5.5, and updates to cPanel & WHM Version 80 will be blocked for any server still running MySQL 5.5. We are also blocking updates for any cPanel & WHM servers that connect to MySQL 5.5 servers running. The MySQL/MariaDB Upgrade interface inside WHM makes upgrading safe and easy.

Why the block?

On December 31st, 2018, MySQL version 5.5 entered End of Life status. Any server currently running MySQL 5.5 will not receive any updates, bug fixes, or security patches for MySQL until MySQL is updated to a version 5.6 or later.

What does this block mean?

You must upgrade MySQL (or move to a supported version of MariaDB) before you can upgrade to cPanel & WHM Version 80. We are also blocking upgrades for servers that connect to remote database servers running MySQL 5.5 and earlier. You must disconnect from those servers or upgrade them to use MySQL 5.6 or later (or change to MariaDB). Otherwise, you will not be able to upgrade to cPanel & WHM version 80.

MySQL 5.7

MySQL 5.7 was released on October 21st, 2015, but we didn’t add support for it until v70. We discussed the reason for the delay in our blog post Being a Good Open Source Community Member: Why we hesitated on MySQL 5.7. The improvements in MySQL 5.7 are vast and certainly worth the time to upgrade. A member of our training team did a presentation at last year’s cPanel Conference comparing MySQL 5.7 to MariaDB 10.2. Take a look at his slides for a deeper dive.

When will support for 5.6 end?

While we had previously planned to end support for 5.6 earlier, we have extended our support to Oracle’s defined End of Life for MySQL version 5.6. It is currently expected to reach End of Life on February 5, 2021. We strongly recommend upgrading to MySQL 5.7 before that time, to take advantage of the new features and overall speed improvements that 5.7 brings with it.

Upgrading your MySQL version

To update your server you can use WHM’s MySQL/MariaDB Upgrade interface. Simply select the version of MySQL or MariaDB that you would like to upgrade to, and the software does the rest of the work! You can read more about this interface in our documentation. We recommend upgrading one version at a time, to ensure the most stability.

If your server To view your server’s connections to remote MySQL servers, use WHM’s Manage MySQL Profiles interface.

https://documentation.cpanel.net/display/80Docs/Manage+MySQL+Profiles

FAQ

We frequently see this type of change trigger some very reasonable questions. To help users find answers more quickly and easily, we wanted to include a list of those questions and their answers.

Can you switch back to MySQL after converting to MariaDB?

No, on cPanel & WHM servers it is not currently possible to migrate back to MySQL once you migrate to MariaDB. If this is a feature you’d like to see, make sure to add your vote on the feature request site, so you will be notified if we do add that feature.

How do I verify databases on my websites are working well post-upgrade?

The best way is to test the websites in a browser and look for database errors and to watch for errors in the MySQL error log. Unless you have customized the error log in your configuration file ( /etc/my.cnf ), then you will find it named $hostname.err in /var/lib/mysql/. For example, if your hostname is ‘host.example.com’, the name of the file will be host.example.com.err. Don’t attempt to edit this file. Only use commands like tail or cat to interact with it:

I got the message from cPanel, need me to upgrade to Mysql 5.7. Is that safe? My server is running WordPress multisite and WHMCS, are those safe?

Yes, both of these applications are safe and compatible with MySQL 5.7.

I have 20+ websites on our server with databases. Is updating MySQL like updating PHP where each account needs to be checked after updating, or should sites that worked in 5.5 still work in 5.7? Or are there certain things I should look out for?

Like with PHP upgrades, we recommend checking each site for problems and checking the error logs, to ensure that you catch any problems with your customers’ sites as quickly as possible.

I keep receiving notifications that my MySQL version is outdated and that I should update. However, I am very hesitant simply because I do not want to be held responsible for any compatibility issues with each account especially those we did not develop. Is this a required upgrade?

Yes, this upgrade is required. We recommend that you contact your customers to give them plenty of notice for your planned server maintenance and ensure that you have account backups enabled.

When will cPanel & WHM Support MySQL Version 8?

Our addition of MySQL hasn’t been assigned a version yet, but it’s certainly something we want to get added. We are hoping to add it in 2019. Add your voice on the feature request site to ensure you get notified when we do add it!

Do to RV Site Builder not fixing the bugs and issues they have had ongoing, we have been working on a new web builder. We have always liked how simple RV is to use, but if it's not stable, it's not worth using long term.

The great news is that we have already found a new web builder that is stable and so far has nothing but glowing reviews. We have done several demos and had people test it for us. So far no bugs or issues have been found yet!

Holidays can be great. You might get see family that you haven't seen for a while, hopefully you get to eat some good home cooked food. But unfortunately some people know you can get distracted with your plans and try to use that to take advantage. This is true with homes and websites. Before Christmas and New Years (the most common days for Internet hacking) make sure your Wordpress sites are 100% updated and your passwords are safe as well. It's always best to have multiple passwords, so if a social network or service gets hacked they can't use those details to access other services you have.

Password managers like Dashlane can do this for you, and it's free. But you'll probably want to upgrade the system eventually as they do leave off popular options you'll want later in the free version.

The number 1 reasons hackers get into websites are not updated Wordpress sites, bad Wordpress plugins, and bad themes. If you used our site builder we have security already built in. And all other PHP script/apps should be checked with the script maker to be sure you have the latest version.

Mainly just make sure everything is updated and that you have a good password so your website will be safe and so you will have peace of mind during your holidays ventures.

We have you have a safe and joyful holiday season.

Thank you,
Web Host Pro

Complaints, too many bounced emails, and blatant SPAM messages will get your account shut down. The new laws now can charge up to $100 per incendent. This means it's not worth mailing to emails you are not 100% sure are o.k.. In fact you are much better off using a third party mailier like Mail Chimp.

In about four months Google's Chrome browser will show an "unsecure message" for any website that does not have SSL installed. The good news is Web Host Pro gives free basic SSL certs for all domains. Simply go to your website with a https:// in front to make sure it's working correctly. It will show a "secure" message in green if everything is correct.

The most common error is that some websites have SSL, but have content linked to unsecured locations. This will still show an error. For example; if you have an image linked with http:// in the front apposed to a https:// in the front it will give an SSL error and not sure the green secured message. If you use Chrome you can right click the page and in the top right corner it will show any errors with an X icon. You can click the error icon or scroll down to the bottom right for a list of any mixed content or errors.

In most cases you won't need to do anything, but double checking that your SSL is working can't hurt!

After abruptly ending our partnership with Strip we have found our first processor to take over credit card payments. 2CheckOut has been around for over a decade in fact we used them back in 2006 but needed more control at the time. Now over ten years later we're really impressed with their system. They have an app, an intuitive interface, and sophisticated fraud control.

The downfall to this change is if you had auto billing to your card on file, you will need to start it over again on your next payment.

You'll simply get an invoice as normal. I will have a link to your invoice which you can either pay one time or start a new subscription. In lieu of 2CheckOut's TOS we had to remove the account credit system. Of course any prepaid credits will still work. We just can't add new credits via the credit adding system. We also had to remove 2-3 year web hosting subscription options.

The pros though are a seamless system that you can trust and control directly if needed.

We plan on adding an additional merchant account as well for customers that need us to manually add payments. We expect this by the end of the month.

What to Expect for cPanel WordPress Integration in 2018

cPanel has been providing WordPress via Site Software for several years, however, there have been some limitations. In the past year, we have sought to not only remove those limitations but also provide server and site administrators with new capabilities. In June of last year, we released the first iteration of WordPress Manager and the updated WordPress package via Site Software. Since then, we have built in new functionality, gave a talk at the cPanel Conference in October about the future, and are actively working on a long-term roadmap of features and functionality.

As part of that roadmap, we must say goodbye to the older WordPress packager, now known as WordPress Legacy in Site Software. In order to help server and site administrators transition, we have developed a deprecation plan that will allow users to be moved to the new package system. Before we get into the deprecation plan, let’s take a look at the benefits of the new WordPress package with WordPress Manager.

Benefits of WordPress Manager

Automatic Updates

The new WordPress package comes with Automatic Updates enabled by default and allows the user to enabled/disable Automatic Updates via the WordPress Manager plugin. This update allows users to circumvent delays when it comes to getting the latest security fixes.

Self-Service Tools

WordPress Manager has self-service tools for site administrators, including the ability to change the password for any WordPress Administrator account.

Upcoming Features

WordPress Manager for WHM

Server administrators will have much of the same functionality available to them as the site administrators have, in addition to new features designed to make managing a server of WordPress instances easier, more intuitive, and less of a hassle.

Staging to Production Cloning

Site administrators will have the ability to stage changes to their sites in a staging area, then migrate the changes to their production site with the click of a button.

User Management

Site administrators will have the ability to create email accounts for their site via the WordPress Administrator Dashboard.

Now that we have a better idea of the benefits and upcoming features you can expect via the new WordPress package with WordPress Manager, let’s talk about the deprecation plan for WordPress Legacy.

Deprecation Schedule

cPanel & WHM 70

Server administrators are given a script that will remove the automatic update restrictions from WordPress Legacy instances, leaving the setting disabled, and convert the configuration files to those of the new WordPress package

New installations of the WordPress Legacy package are prevented in WHM and cPanel

All servers which have the WordPress Legacy package installed via WHM Site Software will have the new WordPress package with WordPress Manager installed automatically, to help users make a seamless transition

Site administrators will have the ability to enable Automatic Updates on WordPress Legacy instances via WordPress Manager. Upon doing so, the configuration files will be converted to those of the new WordPress package

cPanel & WHM Version 72

Provide a WHM WordPress Manager control panel allowing Server Administrators to manager WordPress instances across the server

Ability for a Server Administrator to convert all WordPress Legacy instances to the new WordPress package

cPanel & WHM Version 74

Automatic conversion of any remaining WordPress Legacy instances to the new WordPress package

We believe we have created a deprecation strategy that will allow for the smooth transition of WordPress sites while limiting disruption to the processes of server administrators.

It's very rare to have any websites issue. I just have a safer the better mentality. With that said, I wanted to list the top ways to keep your website extra safe.

1. Change your password every six months or so. Also if possible, use a different password for each website. A neat trick is to simply add something about the website to your normal password. For example, if your favorite password was "huckleberry" you could add something like this for Web Host Pro; "huckleberryWHP" or "hucklyWhpberry". This way you don't have to track down your password file for each site. You want to create a system that's unique to you. I know someone who uses the number above the letter on their keyboard. So with this example for Web Host Pro it would be "hucklyberry260".

Even if you don't have a unique password for each site I would highly recommend changing your password to something new every six months.

2. Make sure your scripts, apps, and plug ins are up to date. This is number one way hackers can break into sites. Simply from having an old Wordpress version or plugin they can run a script kiddy hack and if lucky break in. Now if you forgot to update for a couple months don't worry. This is more for scripts and apps over eight months old.

3. Make backups often. This is the most important of the three because even if they do somehow get your password or use an old version of Wordpress to break in you're still safe. There is no better security than to have multiple backups of your entire website. With cPanel it's easy too. Just use the back up wizard and it will download your whole site, email, and databases right to your computer. It's also nice to just have an older version in case you mess of some source code playing with your site. Something I'm very familiar with.

Thanks for reading!
-Dana

We have been getting some comments about slow websites using the Easy plan. The Easy plan is made for basic websites or a single Wordpress for example. Still with themes and plugins getting more advanced and bulky even a single Wordpress site can slow down. To help, we are tweaking the Easy plan to have .50% more CPU power. This will take about two weeks to implement network wide.

The Pro plan is optimized for Wordpress and over 4 times more powerful than the Easy plan so upgrading is a great option. We just don't want you to think we are trying to get you to upgrade. If we had a choice we will charge $3 for all plans. We just wouldn't be able to pay our bills :)

Got a bricks-and-mortar location in addition to your online business?

Several services can help new customers find you.

Here are 2 examples:

Google My Business. This free service helps small businesses increase their online presence across Google Search, Maps, and Google+. A Yellow Pages-type of service, it reports that 1 in 5 Google searches is location related. You can use keywords, images, and videos, and encourage user reviews to raise your visibility.

Yelp. Yelp is a review site and app that publishes crowdsourced reviews about local businesses. The service is essentially “word of mouth” marketing online. It does require regular monitoring, however. You’ll need to address negative reviews promptly and connect with customers who provide raves. You can also set up your own business page on Yelp.

Building relationships with customers through social channels such as Facebook and Twitter can help you grow your brand and generate sales – especially through referrals. However, if you decide to use social platforms as part of your marketing strategy, be prepared for significant hands-on effort.

To gain followers, you may need to update your content regularly. If a customer reaches out to you, a best practice is to respond promptly – otherwise, you risk damaging your business’s reputation.

It’s important to do your homework before jumping into the social sphere. These resources2 can help:

Facebook provides a Marketing on Facebook page with a step-by-step, general overview of how to use the social networking site to help your business grow or meet other specific business goals.

The Twitter for Business site lets you explore curated content based on specific business goals, from creating or managing a Twitter presence to finding leads on Twitter.

Today there is a new release of the core WordPress open source software, version 4.8 "Evans", named in honor of the great jazz pianist Bill Evans.

On the dashboard the news section now lets you know of meetups and WordCamps in your area, so you can get involved in your local community. There are several new widgets for images, video, audio, and the text widget now has visual editing, making editing sidebars much more accessible for non-coding folks and setting the path for our plans with the Gutenberg editor. There's a change to the visual WYSIWYG editor that's hard to describe but hopefully is a joy for you to experience.

There's more, check out the post above.

As always, you can upgrade WP from inside your dashboard or download it from the usual spots.

How to Optimize Wordpress to Run Safe and Fast

WordPress has become the most famous overloading high CPU script in the world thanks to its popularity with new users. The good news is, even as a new user, optimizing WordPress is pretty easy if you take sometime and follow the steps below.

We listed each optimization for WordPress in order of most helpful.

Before starting, we suggest making a full back up of your WordPress website and database.

Install caching software
Without any caching in your WordPress it has to check every link, image, tag, and more to load each page. To avoid running everything for each visit, there are two caching programs you can easily add as a Plugin from your WordPress admin section. The most common is WP Super Cache and the second is W3 Total Cache. Both are trusted and used by millions of WordPress sites.

Make smaller pages or add Lazy Load
Making your pages smaller will have a major impact on your load. In fact splitting your page in half will normally lower more than half your load use. If you are still dead set on a long page than at least add a lazy Load plug in. The common amount of posts on a page is 5, anything over that is at risk of having load issues.

Remove tags
Tags seem like a great way to tell Google what SEO traffic to send to your site. The truth is, Google has said many times it does not use tags for SEO purposes. Being the third most common reason for overloading WordPress and with no real SEO benefit, removing tags is a great way to lower your CPU and load use. We suggest that if you remove tags to make sure and use sufficient categories to help your visitors navigate well.

It’s officially been three months since we have begun implementing cold aisle containment within our Los Angeles datacenter.

The project has seen positive and significant results since the completion of this project.

Cold Aisle containment allows for energy efficiency, the concept behind it is containing the cold air in cold aisles, to increase cooling capacity and the cooling efficiency of the datacenters.

With this cold aisle containment project, we have seen cooling efficiency increase by over 35%. The cold aisle containment project augments and goes hand-in-hand with our existing cold and hot row aisles arrangement within our datacenters, by enclosing the cold aisle. As the cold air cannot escape or be contaminated by the hot air, we provide constant and consistent temperatures at both the top and bottom of the server racks. This set up has many operational advantages as we’ve witnessed first-hand, and also helps ensure server longevity.

The added new environmental monitoring system monitors for high temperature, low temperature, high humidity, low humidity, air flow loss, high head pressure, air filters, alarms, and more. QuadraNet has also implemented new visual monitoring tools that work alongside with the new proprietary environmental monitoring systems. Web Host Pro is fully staffed on-site 24×7 to monitor our datacenters to ensure all servers remain in an ideal and comfortable environment.

Adding a support pin can be very helpful, for example, it's the easiest way for us to verify that you own the account. This can also help you save time and even help you get out of a bind. If you lost your password and the email on file is no longer active, having your support pin can help us verify your account and get you the new login details fast. Without the support pin, we have to verify a lot of personal details, which takes time and can seem intrusive.

We don't want to use your time or get any of your details, but without a support pin we have to be sure you are the owner before we can give any secure information or make changes on the account. This is to make sure your account is safe, which is our number one priority.

On a side note, we do recommend not making your pin 1234 or 1111. Try to make it at least a little tricky, this way people can't guess it.

In an effort to run a greener datacenter and reduce the company’s carbon footprint, we have decided to implement a “Cold Aisle Containment” initiative at our Los Angles datacenter.

The project is well under way and is scheduled to be completed in October 2016.

The project is based on “Focused Cooling” where the cold aisles are designed to contain cold air generated from the datacenter cooling units by installing doors and tops to the aisles in between racks. Rows of racks are positioned so that two rows have the cold sides facing each other and the hot sides facing the opposite directions. The contained row in the middle becomes the cold air aisle.

By containing the cold air in cold aisles, we not only increase the cooling capacity but also increase the cooling efficiency of the datacenter. In a contained cold aisle, the ambient temperature of the air is lowered allowing the cooling systems to maintain the cool air more efficiently. This also results in a reduced energy cost for the datacenter by allowing the equipment fans to operate at less than full speed.

Since our Los Angeles datacenter was already configured with separate hot and cold aisle rows, creating a containment plan was an obvious solution in reducing our overall energy consumption.

In addition to the environmental impact and cost savings attributes of a cold aisle containment configuration, there are fault tolerant advantages as well. In the unfortunate event of a cooling unit going down, having the cold air contained in the aisles allows the other AC units to deal with the added workload more effectively and adds to the overall redundancy of the facility.

We have received several messages about the Easy plan running WordPress slow. After investigating, WordPress by default seems to run more Ram and CPU than the Easy plan has. To make sure WordPress runs fast on all plans, we have doubled the CPU power and tripled the RAM.

We are very excited about our new plan to open a data center in Phoenix, Arizona. Starting next month, we will start looking for our new facility. Our plan is to go solar like we did in Las Vegas.

The Data Center is also exciting because it will have 5 gig-e connections coming in. This will give us the ability to run a new cloud system for CDN and Cloud app services.

AND we will also add a pop to our DNS for faster resolving.

The latest version of MySQL has forced a stricter password format for all databases. If you notice a MySQL connection error, here is how to fix it:

1. Log into CPanel
2. Click MySQL Databases
3. Scroll down to "Add New User" and fill in the details under it and click "create user"
4. Scroll down to "Add User To Database" and choose the database and user in the drop-down options and click "add"
5. Choose "all privileges" on the "manage user privileges" screen that will pop up and click "make changes".

Almost done…

6. Now in your script, find the configuration file. For WordPress, it is in the main folder and called: wp-config.php
7. Now just add the new user and password in the config file.

Here is an example of the user and password to changed to the new user you just added.

define('DB_USER', 'USERNAME_WP5'); // Your MySQL username
define('DB_PASSWORD', 'PASSWORD'); // ...and password

In this example, you would replace USERNAME_WP5 and PASSWORD with the new one you just created.

We are happy to do this for you, just add a ticket with the location of your config file, and we will do the rest.

Most databases are fine, this only effects databases that created a user several years ago and have never added a new one since the upgrade.

Over the next week we will be upgrading MySQL to version MySQL 5.6, we currently run version MySQL 5.5. The new version released in February 2013 has many upgraded options like:

Improved optimizer for all-around query performance.

Improved InnoDB for higher transactional throughput.

New NoSQL-style memcached APIs.

Improved partitioning that helps query and manage huge tables.

Several replication improvements.

Expanded the data available through the PERFORMANCE_SCHEMA, and improved performance monitoring.

Does not support the User Statistics feature.

If you have any software that may need MySQL 5.5 we will keep a legacy server available that you can transfer to by request. All updated software will work with the newer version and perform better. There is an even newer version of MYSQL called MariaDB 10.0 that was released in March of 2014. We will upgrade to that version around the summer of 2017. The time after the release is make sure scripts are going to work with that version and that any bugs will be fixed in minor versions before it's used in production.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

Web Hosti Pro's Network Operations team is constantly working to improve its network in an effort to lower latency and enhance routing. As part of that commitment to excellence, Web Host Pro officially announced today that its Los Angeles location will now feature transit from NTT and TeliaSonera. NTT, a Japanese telecom company headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, is the largest telecom company in the world in terms of revenue and its network map and global connectivity will contribute an impressive infrastructure to Web Host Pro’s already-premium mix of bandwidth. TeliaSonera, a Swedish and Finish network operator, maintains Europe’s largest and fastest-growing wholesale IP backbone.
Wordpress is now the most hacked software on the Internet. The good news is it's easy avoid this by just putting in a little work. The main reason Wordpress gets hacked is because it's not updated. To update just log into your control panel and you will see an update link to do this automatically. Our App installer also has an auto update option we highly recommend using. The next most important thing is to not use plug-ins that are not listed on the Wordpress site. Hackers use bad plug-ins second to sites that are not updated.

If you do get hacked, don't panic! It's pretty easy to fix. First download your database and your WP-Content folder. Then erase everything in the blog folder and install a new Wordpress. Next import the database and upload the WP Content folder. Make sure there is no .php files in the WP Content folder (this is very important).

I don't mean to scare anyone I just see this issue when it could be easily avoided.

Also always keep backups!

A dedicated hosting service, dedicated server, or managed hosting service is a type of Internet hosting in which the client leases an entire server not shared with anyone else. This is more flexible than shared hosting, as organizations have full control over the server(s), including the choice of an operating system, hardware, etc. There is also another level of dedicated or managed hosting, commonly referred to as complex managed hosting. Complex Managed Hosting applies to both physical dedicated servers and virtual servers, with many companies choosing a hybrid (combination of physical and virtual) hosting solution. There are many similarities between standard and complex managed hosting, but the key difference is the level of administrative and engineering support that the customer pays for – owning to both the increased size and complexity of the infrastructure deployment. The provider steps in to take over most of the management, including security, memory, storage, and IT support. The service is primarily proactive. Server administration can usually be provided by the hosting company as an add-on service. In some cases, a dedicated server can offer less overhead and a larger return on investment. Dedicated servers are most often housed in data centers, similar to colocation facilities, providing redundant power sources and HVAC systems. In contrast to colocation, the server hardware is owned by the provider and in some cases, they will provide support for your operating system or applications.

Using a dedicated hosting service offers the benefits of high performance, security, email stability, and control. Due to the relatively high price of dedicated hosting, it is mostly used by websites that receive a large volume of traffic.

Get prices here for Dedicated Servers

Most people surveyed recently were just as likely to turn to the internet, as they were to ask for personal recommendations about local businesses. For business owners, this is a good indication that now more than ever, it’s important to have a strong online presence. We’ve highlighted a few key takeaways from the survey below:

1) “There has been a significant jump in the number of consumers using the Internet to find local businesses, and the regularity of their ‘searches’ has also increased.” In fact, only 15% of consumers surveyed have not used the internet to find a local business in the past 12 months. This number is down from 21% in 2010.

2) The majority of consumers surveyed use online reviews to make spending decisions. 27% of consumers are regularly reading online reviews, while another 49% are occasional readers.

Local directories like Business Faves is a great place to get a Free Business Listing to help SEO for your business and to help local customers find your business on the internet.

Phasing out Box Trapper Spam Box

Box Trapper is being phased out per Spam blacklists taking the reply email as a form of Spam. This is getting the servers blacklisted with Spam lists.

We added more option in Spam Assassin that will allow for more Spam protection. There is also third party services like SpamArrest.com that have Spam box formats if you still want to use that type of protection. The new Spam Assassin system will allow for full protection and cannot be bombarded by Spammers to have the reply email used as spam.

The issue with Spam box is that Spammers send thousands of emails to the Spam box account so the reply email is sent to Honey pot Emails http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honeypot_(computing). This is getting the servers blocked in Spam lists. There is no way to stop this type of attack and thousands of servers have been black listed from this all over the Internet.

We are always finding new ways to block Spam and with Spam Assassin’s new SpamAssassin Spam Box delivery you can control over Spam without losing any good emails.

We will keep Spam Box on one server in case a customer feels they cannot live without it. We do highly recommend not using it anymore though.

Thank you for your understanding!

If you want to forward email to a free service like Gmail, Hotmail, or Yahoo, you will need to add your Email to your contacts in your free Email service. Each one is different, but if you log into your free Email service, you can usually see the contacts tab or link on the first screen. It should simply say "contacts". Some free Email services even have a whitelist, which is better. If you find the whitelist, then just add your email there to make sure it will arrive o.k.

Also while you are at it, add our general email as well: cs@webhost.pro

Read more details on the blog post here: https://webhostproblog.com/2014/05/wondering-why-your-forwarding-email-not-working/
